The environment of digital technologies has facilitated the development of new types of products and services through the use of mobile technology and the Internet. This phenomenon is the foundation for the digital economy, which is of ever-increasing importance.

Digital platforms allow for a direct and quasi-instantaneous connection between various economic actors. Through online marketplaces, anyone can now offer products or services to the entire world. The traditional relationships between workers or consumers and professionals are thus being blurred, making their legal qualifications uncertain.

An almost state-like relationship has been established between these platforms, which enjoy a dominant position, and their users. This phenomenon requires a redefinition of the social contract and calls for the introduction of a legislative framework in order to protect the interests of all the players of the digital economy.

The rising interconnection between things and the Internet (Internet of Things, IoT; Internet of Entities, IoE) is generating increasing amounts of data that often consist of sensitive personal data. The digital powerhouses at the head of platforms have the capacity to collect massive amounts of personal data which acquire a market value and are at the center of the digital economy. This instrumentalization of personal data challenges the protection of privacy.
